Eating healthy is easier than ever

In June 2011, the USDA announced MyPlate, the new way to represent a healthy diet. Illustrated as a plate, the diagram is a visual representation of how to eat healthy. Half the plate should be fruits and vegetables, the other half grains and protein. Add a glass of low-fat milk on the side, and you've got it.

Forget the pyramid. When you try to remember how to eat healthy, just look down at your plate.

Balancing Calories

  • Enjoy your food, but eat less.
  • Avoid oversized portions.

Foods to Increase

  • Make half of your plate fruits and vegetables.
  • Make at least half your grains whole grains.
  • Switch to fat-free or low-fat (1%) milk.

Foods to Reduce

  • Compare sodium in foods like soup, bread, and frozen meals—and choose the foods with lower numbers.
  • Drink water instead of sugary drinks.
